Cross Connection Control Program

MWC has a Cross Connection Control Program (CCCP) in place to help protect our drinking water. A cross connection typically refers to a situation where the plumbing system or pipelines intended for different purposes (such as potable water, irrigation, or industrial fluids) inadvertently come into contact. This contact can lead to contamination of the potable water supply, posing a health risks to consumers.

Here's a breakdown of what it involves:

1. Types of Connections: Cross connections can occur at a various points in plumbing systems where different types of water of fluids might meet. For instance, a garden hose submerged in a swimming pool could create a cross connection between the pool water and the hose water.

2. Contamination Risk: The main concern with cross connections is contamination of drinking water. If non-potable water or other substances (such as chemicals or pollutants) enter the potable water system through a cross connection, it can compromise the safety of the water supply.

3. Prevention Measures: To prevent cross connections, plumbing codes and regulations require the use of backflow prevention devices. These devices ensure that water flows in one direction only, preventing contaminants from entering the potable water supply if there is a drop in pressure or a backflow event.

4. Examples: Common examples include garden hoses left submerged in containers, connections between industrial equipment and water supplies, or improper plumbing configurations that could allow backflow.

Marion Water Co requires those identified in our water system to annual test as required by the State of Washington (WAC 246-290-490). If an assembly fails the initial test, the necessary repairs should be made and the assembly re-tested.

What should I do if I got a letter?

Complete the Backflow Preventer Inspection & Field Test Report by the annual due date of 10/31. Failure to comply and submit a completed report will result in fines of up to $500.00 and water shut-off.

Who can help me complete the testing requirements?

Testing must be completed by a Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT), certified by the Washington State Department of Health. A list of certified BAT testers can be found at https://wcs.greenriver.edu/bat/hire-a-bat/

Where do I send in my completed test?

You can have the results mailed in to Marion Water Co Attn: CCCP PO Box 2043 Buckley WA 98321 or they can be emailed directly to us at info@marionwaterco.org
